BACK TO BASICS

TITLE: Securing Deployment on Amazon Web Services

PRESENTATION ABSTRACT: AWS in 2014 encompasses a much more sophisticated suite of products and services than the early EC2 compute & S3 file storage. Current generation infrastructure offers a myriad of options for fine-grained security, encryption, access control and authentication. This briefing provides recommended current practices for optimal security, performance and governance for sensitive-data workloads on AWS. Information will be provided for reference architectures, compliance matrices and Amazon senior engineering resources.

SPEAKER:  Kenneth White

SPEAKER BIO: Kenneth White is a principal scientist and senior security R&D engineer at Social & Scientific Systems. His work focuses on cloud security, machine learning, and distributed database architecture. Together with Matthew Green at Johns Hopkins, White co-founded the Open Crypto Audit Project, a community-driven initiative to conduct the first comprehensive  cryptanalysis and public security audit of the widely used TrueCrypt encryption software.  White holds a masters from Harvard and is a PhD candidate in neuroscience and cognitive science, with research focusing on expert systems, real-time classification and machine learning. He is a technical reviewer for the Software Engineering Institute, and publishes and speaks frequently on computational neuroscience, signal processing, and security engineering. He tweets @kennwhite.

TITLE:  The Growing DDoS Threat

PRESENTATION ABSTRACT: In recent years, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have increased dramatically in frequency, size and complexity.  While organizations have existing strategies in place that address a range of security threats, they are not sufficient to combat the new breeds of DDoS attacks that leverage large distributed "botnet" networks of compromised "zombie" machines to simultaneously launch attacks using compliant protocols.  In this session we will discuss the current DDoS landscape, recent events, types of attacks and mitigation techniques.

SPEAKER:  Jim Mason CISSP   Senior Systems Engineer   A10 Networks
