Annual Meeting Highlights:
The ISSA Annual Membership Meeting is being held in Colorado Springs, Colorado in conjunction with the local chapter's 7th Annual Fall Information Security Conference. Thank you to our 2008 Annual Meeting sponsor Google Apps Security and Compliance, Powered by Postini.
All active members should have received the ISSA "Decision to Join" Membership Survey via email on September 22. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and let us know what is important to you – and get a chance to win one of two $100 VISA gift cards. Your input will let us serve you more effectively and help your chapter attract new members.
You will be asked for your perceptions of ISSA specifically and professional associations in general. This ground-breaking study was created by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) to better understand the factors involved in an individual's decision to join a professional association like ISSA, the expectations of membership and how well associations individually and collectively meet those expectations.
The original study was conducted last year. It involved 18 professional associations including IEEE and received 17,000 responses. ASAE is now giving ISSA the opportunity to use the survey to gather important data about our own organization to help shape our future. At the conclusion of the survey, our data (without any personal identification) will be added to ASAE's pool of data.
If you did not receive the survey and feel you should have, please contact ISSA Headquarters, member@issa.org or 866-349-5818 (Toll free within the US) or 206-388-4584 (International), extension 103.
Take time to recognize the outstanding individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to ISSA and the information security profession over the past year. The ISSA Awards Committee will be accepting nominations through December 15.
Acknowledge a fellow member of your Chapter. Winners will be honored at the Annual Awards Ceremony as guests of ISSA International. Recipients will also receive an award icon in recognition of their efforts for use on business cards and in correspondence.
Although the formal nomination must be submitted by your chapter president or a sitting member of the ISSA International Board of Directors, you can help by suggesting potential candidates and highlighting their accomplishments. The nomination guidelines can be found at https://www.issa.org/Library/Members/Operations-Manual/ISSA%20Awards%20Policies%20and%20Procedures%20112907.pdf.
Who would you choose for the following awards?
ISSA Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement and advancement of the profession.
Honor Roll for sustained meritorious conduct and advancement of ISSA.
Outstanding Chapter of the Year recognizes a chapter’s ability to serve ISSA's mission and chapter members. Chapters must self-nominate to receive this award. Awards will be given in three categories for 2008:
Outstanding Communications Program of the Year recognizes a chapter’s contribution to the ISSA and the security profession based upon a chapter’s effort to communicate with its members using its newsletter and website.
Security Professional of the Year recognizes a member’s contribution to ISSA.
Outstanding Organization of the Year recognizes an organization’s contribution to ISSA.
Nominations should be sent to the Chairperson of the Awards Committee at
An independent research survey aimed at understanding how information security professionals are managing their careers, planning for their futures, acquiring information, approaching certification and training, and achieving job satisfaction was recently launched. This survey is the first of its kind, and is being distributed by the ISSA and other information security industry associations. The results of the survey will be shared in the Spring of 2009, in the form of presentations, white papers, and articles. The survey was created by Lee Kushner and Mike Murray, and was inspired by the response to their conference presentations on career management and career development. Dr. Max Kilger, a Senior Advisor to the Honeynet Project, served as an advisor. The survey is independent and without sponsorship, and anyone who currently has a career as an information security professional is encouraged to participate.
More information on the survey can be found at www.infosecleaders.com. The survey is hosted by Survey Monkey and can be found at www.infosecleaders.com/survey.
