ISSA 2006 Award Winners Announced

ISSA announced the winners of its Annual Awards, at the September 19th Annual Membership Meeting in San Francisco CA. The awards where presented by Howard Schmidt, International President of ISSA, and Ralph Spencer Poore, ISSA Awards Chairperson, for outstanding contributions in 2006.

“Through the dedication and contributions of many volunteers, ISSA enhances the depth and breadth of knowledge and expertise of information security professionals. Their gifts of time, wisdom and resources ensure that we are able to provide quality education and professional experiences for our members and the information security community,” stated Howard A. Schmidt. “It is a great pleasure to honor these key individuals and organizations for their service to ISSA and the industry.”

ISSA Hall of Fame Award: William Tompkins. Tompkins, who served as President of the ISSA International Board of Directors in 2002, received the ISSA’s most prestigious award for his career-long contributions to the promotion of the security profession. Active in the ISSA since 1993, he was a member of New Jersey and New York Metro Chapters and helped found the Capitol of Texas and Alamo Chapters. As President, he increased educational opportunities for members by teaming with other organizations and established partnerships that provided ISSA members with training by internationally-recognized security experts in finance, terrorism, privacy issues and cyber sabotage. From 1995 to 1997, Tompkins served as senior planning analyst in the oversight operations division of the Texas Department of Information Resources, leading a team that developed policy, operation and financial recommendations to support IT asset protection for the State of Texas. In 1997, he became chairman of committee to update the state’s information security standards.

Outstanding Security Professional of the Year: Sherry Voit, information security specialist with CACI Technologies, Round Hill, Va. Voit was instrumental in the development of the ISSA Northern Virginia Chapter’s first CISSP study group and the first class in National Security Agency INFOSEC assessment methodology. She played a key role in creating new chapter positions of senior vice president; vice president- education; vice president-membership; vice president-programs; and vice president-sponsorships, which have contributed to the chapter’s vibrant growth and enhanced services to members.

Chapter of the Year: United Kingdom Chapter. The ISSA recognized the U.K. Chapter for its activities and growth over the past three years, including a general membership increase of 100 and a student membership increase of 144. The chapter has a mentoring program for students and those new to the profession. Chapter President Phil Cracknell has written several articles for U.K. newspapers and computer magazines that raised the profile of the information security industry. The chapter realized £50,000 ($95,000) in sponsorship revenues and charges no chapter dues.

Chapter Communication Program of the Year: Capitol of Texas Chapter, Austin, Tex., for creation of its chapter web site, which successfully shifted the chapter’s reliance on newsletter and email announcements to electronic media.

President’s Awards: Robert W. Daniels, information security manager with DWP Account, and Kevin L. Richards, senior manager for Ernst Young LLP, were recognized for outstanding service to the information security industry, ISSA members and chapters and the ISSA International Board of Directors.

Outstanding Organization of the Year: Nortel Government Solutions, for significant contribution to ISSA and the information security profession. The Northern Virginia Chapter specifically cited Nortel Government Solutions’ contribution to the success of the chapter, “Simply stated, if it had not been for the extensive support of Nortel Government Solutions, we would not have achieved the success of becoming the largest ISSA chapter in the world,” states Brian Schultz, Northern Virginia Chapter President.
